Wakoola Water Gardens News · Fall/Winter 2004
Greetings from Wakoola Water Gardens!

It is hard to believe that another summer is gone. The kids are back in school and football season is in full swing! In the Atlanta area, we certainly couldn't complain about the weather this summer. Our temperatures were moderate and we had plenty of rain to keep our ponds filled. Of course, some may say that Hurricane Frances and Ivan added a little too much water to some of our ponds and gardens!

Now that autumn is upon us, it is time to start thinking about how to make sure our ponds get ready for the coming cold months. It is also a time to start sprucing up our gardens by replacing those tired summer annuals with some new rustic colors. And fall is the best time to build your water garden! We have one more pond construction seminar this year: November 6th. This popular class is on Saturday afternoon and will give you a lot of the info you need to begin your project. We will also have our fall seminar series including two sessions on pond winterization. Check inside this newsletter for all the details including dates and times.

At Wakoola Water Gardens we look forward to watching our garden turn colors in the fall. We hope you will stop in and stroll around the ponds to see things such as the spectacular tropical water lilies at their full size, which will continue to bloom until November. We have a new shipment of fountains and statuary to tempt you. A great way to add color to your winter garden is to put out a bright pot filled with flowers. We have many colors add sparkle to your winter garden.

Our gift shop is brimming with new items just in time for holiday shopping (eek, did I say holiday?) Yes, it will soon be time to shop for your favorite gardener and we have lots of ideas for gift giving for that special person in your life. Check inside this newsletter for a sampling of great new products.

Hope to see you soon at Wakoola!

FALL CALENDAR FOR YOUR POND

P  L  A  N  T  S
Water Lilies:
Stop fertilizing hardy lilies when there are no more flowers being produced. The leaves will gradually become smaller and you will notice there are fewer of them. Keep trimming the spent leaves as they yellow. The last leaves of the year will not reach the surface of the water. These should be left on the plant. The pot can be left in the bottom of the pond all winter. Tropical lilies will continue to bloom much longer than the hardies. Keep fertilizing them every 2 weeks until they stop blooming all together. If we have a mild winter, your night blooming tropicals might come back next year. Leave them in the pond all winter to see if they will make it.

Marginal Plants:
Trim off dead growth as needed in the fall to maintain a nice appearance. When all the foliage is brown, trim back entire plant to about 2" above the water level. If you like the looks of the browned foliage it will not hurt the plant to leave it on there until spring. Some of your hardy plants such as irises may stay green most of the winter. If so, lucky you! Just wait until you notice the plant needs tidying up in the spring before you trim back anything. If you have any tropical marginal plants such as Elephant Ear or Papyrus, you can take them into the house or garage for the winter. As long as they don't freeze you may be able to use them again in the spring.

Floating Plants:
Hyacinth and lettuce will not survive the north Georgia winter. Take these plants out of the water as soon as they get brown so that they don't end up on the bottom of the pond with the leaves making algae food for next spring!

Submerged Plants:
Anacharis and hornwort should be left in the pond over the winter. Both are hardy in north Georgia. You may want to trim it back if they have gotten very big as the fish won't eat them during winter.

Pond fish feeding should be reduced when the water temperatures start dropping below 70 degrees. This usually happens in late October or early November. You can continue feeding them as usual until then! When the temperature drops the fish do well with a wheat germ formula food, which will provide them with more protein and less carbohydrates to prepare their bodies for winter. We carry NishiKoi Food in several sizes to use now and in the spring when you start feeding them again.

Your fish need less food as the pond temperature drops. Their metabolisms slow down as the water cools. A good rule of thumb:

>70 degrees Feed fish 2 X daily
60-70 degrees Feed fish 1 X daily
50-60 degrees Feed fish 1 X every other day
< 50 degrees Stop feeding
